Subject: History of Haiti ...I DID NOT KNOW THAT!
The more things change, the more things are the same,
In the 1700’s what is now Haiti was called the “Jewel of the
Caribbean,” and supplied about 40% of the world’s sugar.
In 1791 the government of France passed legislation to phase out
slavery in its Caribbean colonies and grant the former Negro slaves
citizenship. Rather than becoming citizens, Haiti’s Negro
population mass murdered all whites and Mulattoes who could not flee
the Island in time. In 1804 only full blooded Negros remained and
Haiti became the first Negro ruled nation.
The Haitian revolution dominated America’s debate over slavery.
While both the north and the south agreed that slavery should be
ended, southerners and a large percentage of northerners universally
opposed having a large population of freed slaves living in their
midst. The Haitian “Revolution” was fresh in every one’s mind.
Flash forward to 1915. The “Jewel of the Caribbean” is now a
desolate cesspool, that is exporting almost no sugar. The United
States decides to “take up the white man’s burden” and send
the US Marine Corps to rebuild Haiti’s infrastructure and feed
it’s starving population.
The United States gave huge amounts of money to Haiti and over-saw
the building of 1,000 miles of road, telephone lines, modernized its
port, and helped Haiti to start exporting sugar once again. The US
also put an end to the thousands of bandits along Haiti’s border
with the Dominican Republic. The US left in 1934 at the request of
the then stabilized and very ungrateful Haitian government.
Haiti immediately sank straight back into total desolation strife.
In 1973 the United State once again began playing a huge role in
Haiti, giving the Island huge sums of money in handouts each year.
In 1994 the Clinton administration once again sent the US military
to Haiti to rebuild the Island’s infrastructure.
In 1995 the Peace Corps went to Haiti in large numbers to train the
Haitians in job skills. The US government spent almost one Billion
Dollars providing food and job training to the Haitians between '95
and '99.
So when Obama says that Haiti has our full, unwavering, support,
they have already had our full support since 1915.

What a CROCK!!!!
The Haitians were just so impatient and ungrateful that they couldn't wait for their French masters to unlock them an share all their wealth? HA!
Colonial Haiti was one of the most brutal slave colonies in the world. There are estimates that up to a third of the black slaves there died from being worked to death in the boiling Caribbean sun. The Haitians rebelled for their freedom, and good for them!
What was their reward for acting to secure their natural rights? They were shunned and isolated by the entire world, and forced at gunpoint to pay huge reparations to their former French masters! Which they actually did.
I love the American side of this little "history". Oh slavery, everyone agreed that had to go just as soon as possible. And the Americans were just being nice when they occupied Haiti for 20 years.
So when Obama says that Haiti has our full, unwavering, support,
they have already had our full support since 1915.
If what we've done to Haiti is your idea of "support" I'm glad I'm not in need of your help.
Shorter version: Black people can't take care of themselves.

Did you... just... unironically...?
Ugh.
Actually, the French revolutionary government proclaimed equal rights for mulattoes, not slaves. The first revolt happened when the delegate from Paris (who happened to be white) was sent to enforce the proclamation, which the governor (who was also white) refused to acknowledge. This touched off the Haitian revolution and years of bloodshed between warring factions which culminated when the French government under Napoleon sought to reintroduce slavery.
Also, those roads "we" built in Haiti? Guess again. The Haitians were forced to build those roads for free as part of their "road tax," as well as to facilitate military transportation around the island. For free. White man's burden indeed.
Everyone summed it up great, so as an aside:
I remember laughing when Michael "Savage"
Weiner published his book 'Liberalism is a
Mental Disorder' because it seemed like he had
some issues of his own he needed to work out.
But as I watch the conservatives/regressives
sink deeper and deeper into batshit looniness,
it is inescapable who the mentally ill really are.
Poll after poll shows 20-23% of this country
has gone off the deep end.
I guess the Savage Weiner figured if he called
liberals crazy, we couldn't respond because
of some corollary of Godwin's Law. Doesn't
work that way, Mikey. This isn't grade school
'I'm rubber and you're glue.'
Oh my. It's sickening how perverted these rightists are in revising history to suit their needs, and their ugly racism stands out in stark relief. And then they whine & victimize themselves when called on it.
There's even more to the ugly brutal history of Haiti, in which imperialist USA played a nefarious role in backing the horrid Papa & Baby Doc Duvalier's with their TonTon Macouts, and then played a role in ousting the lawfully elected Aristede (sp?). And so on.
If Haiti has problems now, a lot of it can be laid directly at the feet of entrenched white European/USA imperialism, but how much nicer and simpler to just make it into (as one post says): de darkies, dey bes too iggorant and lazie to to do dey job.
EFF That!!
And as for "unwavering support," well, uh, it came with a TON of strings of attached. UGH. What a bunch of lying scumbags.
"white man's burden" ... like ohmyeffengawd: oh no you di'nt!??!! cannot believe it (sitting here just shaking my head in disbelief that even the looney 30% would SINK to that). sheesh.
Second Anon wins...
"Shorter version: Black people can't take care of themselves."
It really doesn't amount to anything other than that.
