FWD: Target Store-Must read!!

Subject: Target Store-Must read!!

Wasn't it last Christmas that Target refused to let the Salvation Army ring their bells in front of their stores?

Dick Forrey of the Vietnam Veterans Association wrote.

'Recently we asked the local TARGET store to be a proud
sponsor of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall during our
spring recognition event.

We received the following reply
from the local TARGET management:
' Veterans do not meet our
area of giving. We only donate to the arts, social action
groups, gay & lesbian causes, and education.'

So I'm thinking, if the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall and
veterans in general, do not meet their donation criteria,
then something is really wrong at this TARGET store. We were
not asking for thousands of dollars, not even hundreds, just
a small sponsorship for a memorial remembrance.

As a follow-up, I E-mailed the TARGET U.S. Corporate
Headquarters and their response was the same.
That's their
national policy.

Then I looked into the company further.
They will not allow
the Marines to collect for 'Toys for Tots' at any of their
stores.. And during the recent Iraq deployment, they would
not allow families of employees who were called up for
active duty to continue their insurance coverage while
they were on military service.. Then as I dig further,

TARGET
is a French-owned corporation.

Now, I'm thinking again. If TARGET cannot support American
Veterans, then why should my family and I support their
stores by spending our hard earned American dollars!

And,
have their profits sent to France ....

Without the American Vets, where would

France be today?

'They, most likely would be speaking German and trading in Deutsch Marks'

Sincerely,
Dick Forrey

Please send this on to everyone you know
to let Target know we don't need them either !

Already debunked on Snopes.com, this letter is from 2002! Do they just pull these out every year?

Dick Forrey has an appropriate name.

Oh, here we go again with this nonsense.

At this point, if the right would just think of something NEW to lie and bitch about, I'd be happy.

Not only fake, but it also contains my favorite RW line.

"They, most likely would be speaking German and trading in Deutsch Marks."

And without France, we'd most likely be speaking with a British accent. That door swings both ways.

France and Germany actually do have the same currency these days.

Just saying, you know.

Great point Celia!

I honestly wonder where the French thing came in. Target isn't French owned. It American founded, grown and owned. How did France become part of the discussion?

Maybe someone mentioned USERRA and the morons thought they were speaking french.

I'm sorry, but someone needs to explain to me why anyone would believe that this supposed statement from Target, a large, publc-traded national chain is real: "Veterans do not meet our
area of giving. We only donate to the arts, social action
groups, gay & lesbian causes, and education."

I mean, really, how gullible must you be to believe that's true? (And, if, by happenstance it were a policy some PR person had made, the company would probably publicly fire that person for being a complete idiot.)

Retailers make money by selling stuff to people - lots of people. Pissing off Veterans (or Gays) or Republicans (or Liberals), is just bad business.

Most corporations, including Target, DO have stated areas of donation giving or grant funding (check out their websites). It doesn't behoove them to provide grants to every cause, no matter how worthy. So I can believe that Target *may* have told a Veteran's organization that they did not meet Target's stated group of causes to which they will provide grants. So what?

Really this is not an outrage or any kind of a "big deal." Businesses are ENTITLED to make decisions about where they spread their charity. Witness Bill & Melinda Gates. They have 2 main charitable themes: literacy and health issues. That is where they focus their planned giving.

Would the Gates' be "unAmerican" if they denied a grant to a Veteran's group? No. The Gates' would not be saying: oh you veterans are gawd-awful people and we hate you, nyah, nyah, nyah. The Gates' would be saying: I'm sure yours is a worthy cause, but it's not where we choose to donate our money.

Sheesh. Grow up. This is just more silliness and stupidity from rightwing assholes, clutching their pearls and heading straight for the feinting couch.

Really stupid and dumb.

Anon#5. All these email forwards are just a modern version of gossip. Why does anyone believe gossip? Because they WANT to.

RWFs fuel a kind of self-righteouness-run-amok that has taken hold of a fearful populace. Make no mistake people who have been absorbing 10 years of Fox news and more years of RW radio are perpetually fearful and not able to think and reason as they should. This is a population nurtured to accept fascism. I pity their stupidity and I fear it too.

How did France become part of the discussion?

I'm guessing one run-in too many with people who pronounce it "Tar-zhay."

Actually, I had to debunk this one once before.

There is a grain of truth to it: Target does NOT give money to veterans' causes. Last time I checked, Target did have a corporate giving program, and the corporate giving program was directed exclusively at EDUCATION.

For the record:

The reason corporate giving programs target one or a few areas - such as education, for example - is because it would literally be impossible to fund every area, and what's more, it would be all-but-impossible even to REVIEW REQUESTS from every area.

Think about this for a moment: How many staff would you have to pay to review donation requests from EVERY sort of good cause out there? If you accepted requests for donations from every kind of organization, your corporate-giving staff would have to look at request not only from veterans and educational groups (pre-k through college), but also from every sort of organization out there: animal-rights organizations, anti-rape organizations, disease-specific "cure" organizations for every incurable disease known to man, the arts (everything from museums to community theatre programs), gay and lesbian rights groups, libraries, religious groups, soup kitchens, food pantries, environmental groups, civil rights and anti-defamation organizations for every ethnic group in America, organizations serving the elderly, organizations serving the disabled, organizations serving children with specific diseases and disabilities, organizations serving adults with specific diseases and disabilities, organizations serving the hungry elderly with disabilities, toys-for-tots programs, care packages for the military, organizations serving military families, anti-gang organizations, prison-literacy organizations, civil liberties organizations, animal shelters, battered women's shelters, domestic violence organizations - and on and on and on and on, not to mention every sort of local organizations doing some version of the above (e.g., the Clean Up Our Local River environmental organization, the Feed The Hungry Here in Podunk City organization, the Helping Victims of Domestic Violence In Podunk County organization - and on and on). And that's just what I can pull out of my head as I type!

Do you have any IDEA how many different kinds of charitable organizations there are in this country? If you had a corporate giving program that reviewed requests from everyone, THEY WOULD HAVE TO HIRE A WHOLE CORPORATION'S WORTH OF EMPLOYEES JUST TO GET THROUGH THE PAPERWORK, AND PAY THEM MORE IN SALARY THAN THEY HAVE TO GIVE OUT IN DONATION MONEY!!

THAT is why EVERY giving program - corporate or foundation - gives only to one or a few select areas, and turns away requests from the vast majority or organizations without even reviewing them.

Target picked education as its area. Target doesn't review requests from veterans' organizations for the same reason it doesn't review request from environmental organizations, or Jewish organizations, or soup kitchens, or whatever - those things aren't EDUCATION, so they're not part of Target's chosen area.

I'm sure that somewhere, some other corporation or foundation has picked "veterans" as a giving area, and refuses to help educational organizations.

Yes, most of the e-mail is fake, but the principle stands, for the next time someone bitches that their pet cause isn't being funded.

I've applied for and received many grants in the course of my career (for various organizations and causes). What a couple of the posts here state is true: most organizations - whether a business or a foundation or whatever - have stated causes to which they give grants.

Anyone used to writing grants knows that there are loads of resources out there for determining which organization, business or foundation offer grants for your specific type of cause or project.

Hence, don't apply for a grant from Target or Starbucks or the Daddy Bigbucks Foundation IF they don't fund the type of cause or project that your are sponsoring. It's not like you have to "guess" what causes are funded; the websites TELL you what they'll fund. Sheesh.

This is like 2 plus 2 equals 4.

Honestly, only a teabagging idiot could get "upset" by something as dumb as this.

GROW the eff UP already.

Anonymous said...

I've been turned down for grants before for good projects. Where were all the teabaggers sending out huffy emails about MY inability to get a grant?? Plus I was mature enough not to throw some hissy fit rage because I didn't get MY way.

Agree with other posts: these people are childish; have a vast sense of their own entitlement; and wish to victimize themselves constantly to some evil force out there that's usually liberal.
