The Democrats have never suggested that we shouldn't pay for healthcare.

For some reason, Republicans are incapable of grasping the idea that keeping for-profit insurance companies in the system results in higher costs.

A single-payer system would cover everyone, cost less overall than we're paying now, and leave workers with bigger paychecks.

Republican politicians have somehow managed to persuade their supporters that these are bad things.

Go figure.
