Click on the Snopes at the end....THIS WILL PROVE TO YOU THAT THIS IS INDEED FACT!!!!!! I AM TRULY SURPRISED....NAIVE I GUESS......and I didnt think I was anymore!!! DUH....

---

Bank of America, can I help you?

Customer: Yes, I want to cancel my account. I don't want to do business with you any longer.

The Bank: Why?

Customer: You're giving credit to illegal immigrants and I don't think it's right. I'm taking my business elsewhere.

The Bank: Well, Mr. Customer, we don't want to see you do that, but we can't stop you. I'll help you close the account. What is your account number?

Customer: (gives account number)

The Bank: For security purposes and for your protection, can you please give me the last four digits of your social security number?

Customer: No?

The Bank: Mr. Customer, I need to verify your information, but in order to help you, I'll need verification of who you are..

Customer: Why should I give you my social security number? The reason I'm closing my account is that your bank is issuing credit cards to illegal immigrants who don't have social security numbers. You are targeting that audience and want their business. Let's say I'm an illegal immigrant and you've given me a credit card. I have a question about it and call for assistance. You wouldn't be asking me for a Social Security number, would you?

The Bank: No sir, I wouldn't.

Customer: Why not?

The Bank: Because you would have pressed '2' to speak in Spanish. We don't ask for that information when calling in on the Spanish line.

If it does raise the hair on the back of your neck, then forward it to every human in the country including every representative in Washington , DC four time s a week for a month.

Way to invoke Snopes to not prove your point.

Yes, B of A is (or was) giving credit cards to immigrants. No, this doesn't hurt you, and I highly doubt that this phone conversation took place.

Let's think, why would they want your SSN to perform a major operation like canceling your account? Could it be that they are trying to protect you from identity theft and want to be sure that you are you? Oh my God, what a concept!

And as for the "not asking about it" on the Spanish line, that's most likely crap. Newsflash: there are American citizens whose primary language is Spanish.

God, these wingnuts are such whiners. Oh no, the Bank is trying to make money by expanding its customer base! Damn capitalists!

Will we hear a peep out of them about predatory lending, horrible overdraft policies, credit default swaps, or any of the other bank practices that consistently screw over working class Americans? Not a chance. They only care about stupid, irrelevant crap like this which doesn't effect them in the least. Idiots.

You realize that when you cite
Snopes for this, you should
proablably check Snopes for
other stuff, right?

Even stuff you disagree with or
doesn't fit in with your tightly
wound ideology?

As to your point about immigrants:

"Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"

...does that ring a bell?

I love the assumption on the part of the bank employee that any illegal would automatically press "2" for Spanish.

Because there are no illegal immigrants from non-Spanish speaking countries, nor are there any English-speaking illegals.

Yeah. Whatever.

How dare a large bank expand their target audience and make more money? Who do they think they are? Credit cards with a pitiful $500 credit limit and crippling 24% interest rate should be for citizens only!

I do find it rather humorous that conservatives consistently rag on Snopes for being part of some evil liberal conspiracy, but will happily cite it and provide the links when it agrees with them.

Of course the Snopes article doesn't address the real claims made in the RWF (and helpfully highlighted) that people who speak Spanish are treated preferentially. As Snopes points out they may not have to give their SS#, but the trade-off is higher interest rates.

The forwarding request (send it to every human) makes me giggle. As I have discovered My RWD believes the more times you receive a viral email the more truthful it becomes.

Uh, do these people realize that Bank of America, despite its name, is an INTERNATIONAL corporation?

According to B of A's very own website, they provide services in Asia, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Canada, in addition to the US.

Difficult though this may be to beleive, "illegal immigrants" are citizens of some other country, so they get services just like people from any foreign country do. B of A is a corproation in the business of providing financial services on five continents, not an immigration-enforcement agency for the US, or for any other country either. What difference does it make to them if they're giving a credit card to a foreign national living there, or a foreign national living here? It's (international) business.

That said, social security numbers are a form of American identification for American citizens, a way to prevent identity theft for one particular subset of B of A customers.

This is the way international corproations work, people. They have lots of customers who aren't American citizens. They exist for the purpose of making money, not for the purpose of investigating whether a customer is in the wrong place at the wrong time according to the laws of whatever country they happen to be calling from.

You DO like businesses, the free market, and all of that, right?

Nobody tell the wingnuts that Bank of America was originally the Bank of Italy, founded in San Francisco by the son of immigrants, for the purpose of catering to immigrants other banks would not serve.
