It's everywhere. Blame Kennedy, Johnson, Clinton, Carter, Obama, or Bush's. The real culprit is US. We have allowed the Congress to gather the power to generate this mess. November is coming. We need to fire ALL incumbents that are up for reelection this time and get the rest as elections appear. God help US!

Are we in trouble or what?

Tom Selkis' (Latham Ford) Facebook..........
True story yesterday at the dealership.....

"I'll try to make this as short and to the point as I can. One of my salesmen here had a woman in his office yesterday wanting to lease a brand new Focus.  As he was reviewing her credit app with her he noticed she was on social security disability.  He said to her you don't look like you're disabled and unable to work.  She said "well I'm really not, I could work if I wanted to but I make more now then I did when I was working and got hurt" (non-disabling injury).  She said the gov't sends her $1500.00 a month in 1 check; she gets $700.00 a month on an EBTcard (food stamps), and $800.00 a month for rent.  Oh yeah and 250 mins free on her phone. That is just south of $3500.00 a month.  When she was working she was taking home about $330.00 per week.  Do the math and then ask yourself: "why the hell should she go back to work?"  If you multiply that by millions of people you start to realize the scope of the problem we face as a country.  Once the socialists have 51% of the population in that same scenerio we are finished........ and we are real, real close.  The question is: when do we cross that threshold if we haven't already?

She didn't lease the Focus here because the dealer down the road beat our deal by $10.00month. Glad to know she is so frugal with her hard earned money!

Let's just set aside for a moment how fake this whole welfare queen story sounds.

If she's getting SSDI, she's already worked enough to earn her Social Security credits. Good work!

Then for the numbers:
$1500 + $700 + $800 + free cut-rate phone plan = "just south of $3500"? This is some shoddy arithmetic.

SSI benefits are $674/mo if you're blind or disabled, which this lady is not. Also, buying a $16,000 Ford Focus would almost certainly disqualify her from SSI, which is means-tested.

The average monthly SNAP (food stamp) benefit is $133, not $700. If I'm reading this calculator right, you'd have to have an unemployed family of 8 with a $1500/mo rent to get that kind of food assistance.

Also, if we assume she's not on SSI, that rent assistance should really be counted as part of the SSDI payment.

By the way, the only reference to Tom Selkis (aside from this e-mail) that I can find online is his dealership's citation for violating lemon laws. So far, I haven't found any proof he actually wrote this.

Oh, and I missed that "When she was working she was taking home about $330.00 per week." ...or $17,160 per year (which is close to the poverty level).

So her SSDI benefits wouldn't be above $850 a month no matter how young she is.

The dealer down the road? What the hell town has 2 identical car dealerships down the road from each other? Aren't those franchised out carefully with well defined territories?

And you would know her lease terms from that other dealership? And who leases a Focus?

Thanks to Anon, above, who did the heavy lifting in terms of point out how fact-free this screed is. Of conservatives looong ago gave up living in reality, so that they could be firmly enscounced in a fictional cloud-cuckoo land of their own design.

I'll repeat what I said in the prior post, just before this one:

What a load of hooey.

I've known 2 people on SSDI. Both were definitely disabled, and both could not work. Neither got a lot of money, either in terms of Soc Sec monthly payments, food stamps or what have you.

Rightwing think tanks make up bullshit like this and don't even bother to lie accurately enough to make the math work. Of course, why should some overpaid hack on wingnut welfare bother to strive to make the math more accurate when gullible conservatives will eagerly lap up horse shit like this and declare that it was a really tasty fine meal.

Rightwing propoganda: inaccurate, lazy, lies, bullshit, bogus.

I guess what I don't understand about all of these... what do they think is in it for Obama if he WAS a socialist and did get everyone on government assistance? How would that benefit him in any way? What's the motivation exactly?

Anonymous said...

@ Anon

Its self-victimization, plain and simple.

In their twisted worldview Obama is nothing but a power hungry dictator who wants to burn down their churches and turn their precious daughters into harlots (or turn American into an atheist Islamic one world Caliphate, or something), and this kind of imaginary socialism is Obama's way of buying off all these leeches so they'll vote for him and support him.

And of course, you can only buy off these lazy, good for nothing Obama supporters by "stealing" from honest, hardworking, salt of the earth Republicans like them.

Of course they'll never admit that they themselves have benefited tremendously, both directly and indirectly, from government policy.

Well, gee, tea-baggin' dummies....even if that ridiculous scenario were true, do you know why congress is such a mess?

Hint:

you are indeed a part of the problem.

To 4th Anon:

It can all be boiled down to: the rightwing think tanks *sometimes* (but not always) enjoy referring to Obama as this giant SochulistCommonistNazi because it's a change from having to figure out how to say he's an "N" word without, you know, using the racist term, itself (which is what they'd really like to say).

Calling Obama an "socialist" is just an easy "out" for telling the rightwing base to get their racist bigoted hate on... and then feel all warm 'n fuzzy when they go sing kumbayah at Church on Sunday.

On Balloon Juice, the term of choice is "Ni-CLANG" for the word-they-want-to-say-but-dare-not-yet-say, following a certain scene in the classic "Blazing Saddles".

Obama seems the odds on favourite to be reelected. I look forward to some overexcited wingnut actually using the word out loud if and when he wins.

How very generous of you, skipping over Ford, Nixon, and Reagan like that.

I responded to the Right Wing Dad who sent this to me by saying, "Thank god Obama was in office instead of Mitt, because there would be no Ford dealership, as Mitt did not support the auto industry bailout. The woman on social security disability benefits would be at a Hundai dealership, and the Ford dealership worker would be out of a job.

I was on food assistance last year at this time. I was not unemployed, but self-employed struggling to keep my business afloat in these tough economic times. I have a family of 5 and was making approx $20,000/yr. at the time. We were given $640/month in EBT food assistance. I can't comment on SSI or rent assistance, but based on my experience, $700/month for food assistance does not sound out of the question.

For the anonymous post that commented there would be no Ford dealership if Romney were president...Ford didn't take bailout money.

To the person that asked "what's in it for Obama" - here's a hint...
http://www.forbes.com/2011/05/17/cities-with-most-billionaires.html

Now ask yourself, how did these people become so wealthy? The answer is in most cases that they were politically well connected and were given or allowed to buy (at huge discounts) property that was previously nationalized.

Ford didn't take bailout money.

But their fate was linked to the fate of the other Big 2, especially when it comes to the parts industry. Which is probably why the CEO of Ford was in support of bail outs for his competitors. He knew that if they went down they would drag him down too.

@ Anon

Doesn't answer the original question. Nationalizing assets and selling them off is one thing, but the question was about the supposed advantage to him wanting to make poor people dependent on government.

I believe this story is true, but I'm guessing the lady had her numbers wrong. With a rental house, I've delt with a couple of poeple on welfare, and they aren't the brightest. (Except that they know how to work the system for free money, because that's all thier parents ever taught them)

Anonymous said...

The reason Obama did it was for votes. He new if he gave everything away, more people would vote for him. And after 4 more years, he will be living off the gov't too. Retired presidents are no different than people on welfare, except they get a much bigger check. And that goes for all of them. They are already millionairs, why do they need more of our money. Becauese they are greedy like everyone else.

So then its NOT TRUE! The tale relies on the numbers being correct in order to work.

I see, so doing a job with a defined salary and benefits doesn't entitle you to collect those benefits. Great system you got there.

They are already millionairs, why do they need more of our money. Becauese they are greedy like everyone else.

So now greed is bad? When Romney and his ilk destroy lives in order to suck out as much money as possible it was held up as proof of his ability and virtue. But collecting payment for public service is bad?

Well, that's interesting. I found this site because I was looking for evidence that the email was fraudulent. Nice to see others are on it too. However, that said, I know a man who has been on disability (SSI) for 25 years. I roomed with him for a couple years to save on rent. The only reason he could not work a fulltime job was because he liked to go out drinking all night and could not get up in the morning. He worked odd jobs under the table to supplement his income. To be fair, it was nothing like the email story, but he seemed perfectly satisfied that he didn't have to put in his weekly 40.

That makes no sense. If the car dealer down the street goes out of business, more car buyers will come to my dealership to get a new car. Question: Do you listen to yourself when you talk?

Anonymous said...

Oh give it a rest. Romney's was to take businesses that were on the edge of complete collapse and, if possible, turn them around and make them successful again. I'm sure in many cases, that just wasn't possible. What could be salvaged was put to use but, what can you do with land and structures and machinery that are costing more than they produce. If the facility goes under, all the jobs are lost. Hard decisions have to be made or everyone loses. If you can do better, then have at it. Some businesses cannot be saved. I'm 61 years old and, the facility I worked at for 12 years had to be closed for the overall health of the company. Thankfully, I was hired at a similar operation. Life is supposed to be a challenge, not 'easy street'. If you cannot understand this, you will make yourself bitter.
