"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the US Government cannot pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies. Increasing America’s debt weakens us domestically and internationally. Leadership means that ‘the buck stops here.' Instead, Washington is shifting the burden of bad choices today onto the backs of our children and grandchildren. America has a debt problem and a failure of leadership. Americans deserve better.”

SENATOR BARACK H. OBAMA, MARCH, 2006

He was right then, and he's right now.

Maybe we could cut some of our bloated war funding while at the same time raising taxes back on the top 1% so that we could actually balance the books.

Oh, wait. Silly me, Republicans would never sign off on that.

Here's a better idea. Why don't we return tax rates to those under Ronald Reagan? Republicans believe that everything Reagan did was holy, so why not?

Republican Pres. Reagan & both Bush's raised the debt limits. There was no fanfare about it at the time because they were Republicans.

Now we have fanfare about raising the debt limit and some rightwing thinktank reliably barfs out some garbage about Barack Obama in order to maintain the "left v. right" "Democrat v. Republican" paradigm.

That paradigm is dead. The really War is the Class War, and it's about the upper 1% v. the rest of us.

Agree: get out of the Wars that we never should have gotten into in the first place, and return progressive tax rates to what we had under Sainted Reagan... and guess what? A huge boatload of debt will be paid down.

And just think if we returned tax to Reagan rates and things get better we could credit the Gipper

Republicans voted to raise the debt ceiling SEVEN TIMES under president George W. Bush. What's different now??

That would be historic, since it would qualify as the first time he ever deserved to be given credit for anything.

I think the Dims are missing the point. The Senator knows that it is totally wrong but he has raised it far beyond the amount it was raised before. Now it's OK because he is doing it? Wake up you entitlement brainiacs. Socialism has never worked and it will lead to the complete ruin of this country. The messiah has not come.

No, the Senator knows that its probably not a good idea to be emptying the treasury on tax cuts for the rich and endless wars of stupidity, which is where most of our current debt comes from.

Now it's OK because he is doing it?

I know! Who does he think he is, a Republican? Those guys are the only ones who get to change the rules every day!

Wake up you entitlement brainiacs.

NO, Dammit! You wake up, you fucking wingnut! Wake up and listen well: ENTITLEMENTS DID NOT CREATE OUR DEBT!

Socialism has never worked and it will lead to the complete ruin of this country.

If and when it gets here, please let us know. Until then Capitalism seems to be doing a pretty strong job of destroying our country.

The messiah has not come.

And if he ever did, Republicans would still find ways to call him a traitorous commie dog. Its really their biggest talent.
