Fwd: Where? Only in America....

Subject: Fwd: Where? Only in America.....

1) Only in America could politicians talk about the greed of the rich
at a $35,000 a plate campaign fund raising event.

2) Only in America could people claim that the government still
discriminates against black Americans when we have a black President,
a black Attorney General, and roughly 18% of the federal workforce is
black. 12% of the population is black.

3) Only in America could we have had the two people most responsible
for our tax code, Timothy Geithner, the head of the Treasury
Department and Charles Rangel who once ran the Ways and Means
Committee, BOTH turn out to be tax cheats who are in favor of higher
taxes.

4) Only in America can we have terrorists kill people in the name of
Allah and have the media primarily react by fretting that Muslims
might be harmed by the backlash.

5) Only in America would we make people who want to legally become
American citizens wait for years in their home countries and pay tens
of thousands of dollars for the privilege while we discuss letting
anyone who sneaks into the country illegally just become American
citizens.

6) Only in America could the people who believe in balancing the
budget and sticking by the country's Constitution be thought of as
"extremists."

7) Only in America could you need to present a driver's license to
cash a check or buy alcohol, but not to vote.

8) Only in America could people demand the government investigate
whether oil companies are gouging the public because the price of gas
went up when the return on equity invested in a major U.S. oil company
(Marathon Oil) is less than half of a company making tennis shoes
(Nike).

9) Only in America could the government collect more tax dollars from
the people than any nation in recorded history, still spend a trillion
dollars more than it has per year for total spending of $7 million PER
MINUTE, and complain that it doesn't have nearly enough money.

10) Only in America could the rich people who pay 86% of all income
taxes be accused of not paying their "fair share" by people who don't
pay any income taxes at all.

I'll let other commenters dissect the details. One point I want to make.

Mexicans, Argentinians, Canadians, Costa Ricans, Panamanians, Brazilians, Venezuelians, and even Cubans are all Americans.

Everybody on the two continents are Americans.

We're the United States OF America, not America.

Stop being so damned arrogant.

1) Technically true, because in other countries the currency would be different.

2) I didn't realize that the President was the one and only voice of government in this country. I guess he's responsible for all those voter discrimination laws being passed all over the country, right? And we could apply this to other groups as well: there's plenty of female elected officials, so how can there be a "war on women"?

Of course, the bigger discrimination issues are outside the government, but never mind those pesky details when certain folks are being "uppity".

3) Since when is the Treasury Secretary or the Ways and Means committee responsible for the tax code?

4) Yes, because the media never worries about the victims or their families. What the hell "media" are you watching anyway?

5) Who is "discussing" this?

6) Again, who the fuck ever said this?

7) Not true.

8) Oil companies are the most profitable organizations in history, but since they don't make as much "return to equity" as a company which thrives on sweatshop labor then we should just ignore their potential abuses. Can't really be that bad, can they?

9) Um... if you're spending more than you're taking in, then you don't have enough money. Pretty basic.

10) 86%? That's about the top 25% of all filers. Since when have people complained about the top 25%? Its the 1% I'm interested in, because no, they don't pay their fucking fair share. Since I'm actually a member of the 25%, does that mean I'm allowed to complain about rich fucks not paying their share of taxes?

No one opposes a balanced budget. Educated people acknowledge that sometimes the government must borrow to stimulate the economy. And who's ignoring the Constitution? Is it the Republicans, who think it's OK to hold citizens at Guantanamo Bay without charges for years on end? Or is it the Democrats (with the Republicans in agreement), who think that it's OK to kill citizens using drones without charging them with a crime? Just asking.

Only in America could you need to present a driver's license to

Only in America would someone confuse a liquor store's policies with those of the government.

Only in America could the rich people who pay 86% of all income
taxes be accused of not paying their "fair share" by people who don't
pay any income taxes at all.

Only in America would a political party insist on repeated tax cuts and then complain afterwards that some people aren't paying taxes.

Nitpicking this e-mail is like shooting fish in a barrel, so I'll just call out point #2:

[R]oughly 18% of the federal workforce is black. 12% of the population is black.

Looking here and here, we get:

Black population: 12.3%
Percent of labor force: 13.4%
Percent employed: 11.7%
Percent unemployed: 19.2%

Three of these things are a lot like the others
Three of these things are kind of the same...

(Then I went looking for fact check responses and found conservatives actually blaming the Great Society for "destroying the traditional black family in the 1960s." Words fail me.
