Just Stay

A nurse took the tired, anxious serviceman to the bedside.

"Your son is here," she said to the old man.

She had to repeat the words several times before the patient's eyes opened.

Heavily sedated because of the pain of his heart attack, he dimly saw the young uniformed Marine standing outside the oxygen tent. He reached out his hand.  The Marine wrapped his toughened fingers around the old man's limp ones, squeezing a message of love and encouragement.

The nurse brought a chair so that the Marine could sit beside the bed. All through the night the young Marine sat there in the poorly lighted ward, holding the old man's hand and offering him words of love and strength.  Occasionally, the nurse suggested that the Marine move away and rest awhile.

He refused. Whenever the nurse came into the ward, the Marine was oblivious of her and of the night noises of the hospital - the clanking of the oxygen tank, the laughter of the night staff members exchanging greetings, the cries and moans of the other patients.
Now and then she heard him say a few gentle words. The dying man said nothing, only held tightly to his son all through the night.

Along towards dawn, the old man died. The Marine released the now lifeless hand he had been holding and went to tell the nurse. While she did what she had to do, he waited.

Finally, she returned. She started to offer words of sympathy, but the Marine interrupted her.

"Who was that man?" he asked.

The nurse was startled, "He was your father," she answered.
"No, he wasn't," the Marine replied. "I never saw him before in my life."

"Then why didn't you say something when I took you to him?"

"I knew right away there had been a mistake,
but I also knew he needed his son, and his
son just wasn't here.

When I realized that he was too sick to tell whether or not I was his son, knowing how much he needed me, I stayed."
I came here tonight to find a Mr. William Grey.
His son was Killed in Iraq today, and I was sent to inform him. What was this Gentleman's Name?

The Nurse with Tears in
   Her Eyes Answered,
Mr. William Grey.............

The next time someone needs you ... just be there.  Stay.

Roy Popkin wrote this as a fictional short story for Reader's Digest in 1965.

The worship of all things military in this country since 9/11 continues to baffle me.

We can't feed the poor or provide comprehensive health coverage to our citizens, but we've always got a few extra billion for Lockheed.

Oh come ol' CharlieE - Don't ya' know that "FREEDOM ISN'T FREE"?!?!

And stop being such a fokin' liberal peace dove hypocrite....when was the last time that YOU actually worked at a soup kitchen or fed the less fortunate/needy/"poor"? Never....AMIRITE? AMIRITE? Damn right, I'm right!

Now get outta here with your "compassion" for the poor....your type are a dime-a-dozen.

Mike Hawk

P.S. - Who said we Couldn't "provide health coverage" to our citizens? Who? If you want health care coverage you can certainly get it anywhere in the 50 states that compromise this wonderful country.

Perhaps what you meant to say was health care insurance....no?

What a dunce.....ignorance is bliss, I suppose.

Well there's the spoon we can all gag upon.

I didn't see it as a worship of "everything military" but more of sugary story of the human condition and compassion. It's a feelgood story which is fine by me and is head and shoulders about the shit normally forwarded.

Good "snoping" Gruaud.

While one can expect loads of saccharine in 'Reader's Digest' "feel good" stories, this RWF is a big bowl of sugar lumps dowsed in syrup. It's recycling from decades ago is timed to take advantage of the military/patriotic masturbation of the post 9-11 era, and meld the flag-waving chickenhawks with the kooks of the religious right.

Oh yes Mr_Creosote, you really nailed this one.

You know shit about me, dood. Why don't you, just for once, try contributing something other than personal criticism here?

Having been with some elderly relatives during their death process, it is understandable that someone would not want to be alone at such a time. That said, the romanticized notion of having a Marine or other enlisted military attend you while you die does strike me as more military masturbation, too. JMO, of course.

And we certainly have seen a steep rise in this kind of fetishizing the military since 9/11, esp by RWD, who either served a long time ago or not at all. Frankly, growing up after the WWII years, the notion was that we really didn't want to get back into conflict again.

Via the media, backed by the MIC & the PTB, the proles have been manipulated into viewing the military and all armed conflicts in a very romanticized - and completely inaccurate - way.

RWD here wants some Marine to attend him at his death bed. How 'bout RWD, instead, spend significant time at his local VA hospital assisting returned, injured & damaged Vets of our current WarS??

As usual, this all about RWD and HIS needs. I really don't see him giving a crap about the needs of enlisted personnel or returning Vets in treacle like this.

BTW CharlieE....do you masturbate over your fearless leader's ACA claims????

As usual, Barry is full of shit/mierda.
