It's easy to point blame and wish a pox on them all, but ultimately the people we elect are a representation of the nation we are.

Are you serious? The 545 representatives truly represent our total country's views. That is the best joke I heard all day.

Yup. They represent who we are as a nation. If your elected officials don't actually represent your given policy preferences, whose fault is that? What allows such a thing to happen?

That's the thing about democracy: you get the government you deserve. If the populace were informed, active and engaged, Congress would be a lot more responsive.

So go ahead and throw your hands up and disengage from your role as a citizen, just don't expect your voice to be heard and don't expect sympathy when you complain about the system.

Explain to me why 68% of the populace hate Obamacare and we get stuck with that pile of crap program. Did I mention abortion? I'm sure the majority of the people don't agree with that form of murder.

68% don't hate Obamacare, especially not the individual components of it. In fact, if you ask most people about those components, the only one that gets a negative response is the individual mandate.

Did I mention abortion? I'm sure the majority of the people don't agree with that form of murder.

True, because a majority don't consider it "murder". The results on this are even clearer: about 20% of those polled want to ban abortion completely. The rest either think it should be legal all the time, legal most of the time, or legal in certain cases. This is a consistent trend over time. The right tries to confuse the issue with the label "pro life", but research has consistently shown that a strong majority of Americans, even those who call themselves "pro life", are in favor of abortion being legal all or most of the time.

But suppose for a second that you were right (which you aren't, but its a hypothetical). And lets set aside things like minority rights and constitutional protections, which are enshrined in the Constitution. In that case, who's to blame if the elected officials aren't represent the will of the people?

Answer: THE PEOPLE!

THEY are the ones who need to get informed. THEY are the ones who need to vote, and to vote more than once ever 4 or 8 years if they feel like it, and to demand that their votes are counted correctly. THEY are the ones who need to do 10 minutes of research in order to see past all the lies and bullshit spouted by our bought and paid for media and the various political hacks. THEY are the ones who need to demand that their policies be enacted.

I'll say it again: "That's the thing about democracy: you get the government you deserve."

And its true. Notice the key word: deserve. What kind of government do deserve? Well, what have you done to make the government answer to you? When half the country can't even be bothered to vote, they give up their voice, and thus deserve whatever the other half picks. When a good portion of that other half votes only out of habit and can't be bothered to invest any significant brainpower into the endeavor, then they get a government reflective of that amount of effort.

Citizenship is not a spectator sport. Unless you demand better and back up your demands with sustained action you'll continue to be ignored.

Actually, conserve-anon has it backwards.

69% of citizens favor socialized medicine UNTIL taxes are mentioned. Even if they're not the ones being taxed.

It's ALL in how you ask the question.

From CNN...

"In general, would you favor or oppose a program that would increase the federal government's influence over the country's health care system in an attempt to lower costs and provide health care coverage to more Americans?"

Americans favor government intervention in the health system by 69%-29%.

'Oh, shit. Ok, so let's ask it this way...'

"In general, would you favor or oppose a program that would increase the federal government's influence over the health care you and your family receive in an attempt to lower costs and provide health care coverage to more Americans?"

When it involves their own care and their families, approval is still high, but a bit lower: 63%-36%.

'Damn it! Ok, so let's ask it THIS way...'

"Do you think the federal government should guarantee health care for all Americans, or don't you think so?"

Americans favor guaranteed health care for all, by a margin of 62%-38%.

'Hmmph. Still not getting the answer we want! Let's try this...'

"Would you prefer a health care reform plan that raises taxes in order to provide health insurance to all Americans, or a plan that does not provide health insurance to all Americans but keeps taxes at current levels?"

It is now a 47%-47% tie, thanks to the threat of tax increases.

'High fives for everyone!!!!'

And that's how rightwing polling (Rasmussen is notorious for this) works.
