I remember that I applauded Monday, as well.

I always wondered what Thomas and his little boy were protesting.

@gruaud

IIRC, the reason he gave is that they were trying to draw attention to the fact that his wife was being treated/confined in a mental health facility, and they wanted to get her released.

It never really made a lot of sense, and one gets the impression that they didn't really think out their protest too deeply.

Thanks, anon. Thomas was probably imbibing a little liquid courage, too.

Interesting. I don't remember this at all, but at the time it happened, I had no tv and paid no attention to baseball. What Monday did is fine and good for him.

It appears that Thomas was possibly drunk, distraught & mentally ill. Not the best idea to burn a flag for such reasons, but I'm not one to get super patriotic-y over an incident like this, especially given the circumstances.

Yes, I think Monday did the right thing. It's fine to honor him, I suppose, but IMO seems a bit overkill in some way... milking the situation to gin up the rabble to be all emotional about what is basically a symbol. But that's just me. I had a chuckle at Tommy Lasorda inserting himself into the glory of it all.

I also did a little searching around and duly noted that over 3 decades later, commenters were eager to say that Thomas *must have been a Muslim*!!!!11!!

So there you go, and that's my reason for not seeing such treacle-y gobbledygook as anything more than propaganda for the rubes.

Good for Monday. Can we turn the page now and get over the sentimental slobbering over this past event that really had nothing to do with anyone bearing any kind of ill will towards the USA. The perp was mentally ill and drunk. Get over it.

Q: What does this have to do with Memorial Day?
A: Nothing.

"View it and reflect on what happened and why."

Some mentally ill person decided to burn a flag to draw attention to his family's plight. A poor decision, for which he was fined.

Monday, a prof ball player, had a reasonable reaction time and grabbed the flag before it could be burned. Good going, but Thomas wasn't protesting the USA or exhibiting any real threat to anyone, other than disturbing the game.

OK nostalgia for baseball buffs. Seems like a real reach to somehow equate this with ??? I don't even know what. Silly. Using the incident for propaganda purposes cheapens what happened.

Does seem to be over the top:

IT WAS A PLAY THAT FOR THE MOMENT BROUGHT PEOPLE TOGETHER TO THINK ABOUT SOMETHING THAT THE NATION SEEMS NOW TO FORGET.

The sentence doesn't really make sense, but no wonder it's been forgotten. In the scheme of things, it's not a big deal. OK if you like baseball, but otherwise? Whatever.
