---what i can find online says that this is an orphan adopted by a Soviet regiment, who I think was well under 18 at the time of the "adoption." Also, the photograph might have been taken as part of official propaganda. I do not know if he actually saw combat, or just posed with a gun while staying behind the lines someplace relatively safe, on a regular basis. Once again, if a an official Soviet newspaper report said he fought on the battlefield next to the adults, does that mean it is true?
