Reagan, of course, was the beginning of the road that leads straight to Trump.

Teach the people to hate and fear; teach them that government is failed idea. Learn to use racism and xenophobia to get elected. Teach them that unions are a scam and that education makes people worthless.

And then express shock when your electorate nominates something like Trump.

This is an old tactic. In the early 80s, living in California I had a Republican friend who asked me to go out and help her get signatures on a farm related petition. She was paid for the work. I was young and uninformed on the issue, but she told me what to say to people, and we collected signatures for about an hour before someone walked up, looked at the petition and told me that she was a farmer and the petition was actually the exact opposite of what we were telling people. I felt horrible and never did that again. It's hard to prove a lie if you keep the information vague enough. But I'd be interested to know if this case goes anywhere.

"Nice to meet you, Mr. Mayor. How are things in your city? - Ronald Reagan, upon encountering his Secretary of Commerce at a public function.

Ronald Reagan thought that trees caused more pollution than cars.

Let's not forget that the man was elected on a promise to increase military spending, cut taxes, and balance the budget by 1982.

I'm not sure what's worse - that he promised such ridiculous things, or that millions of people believed him.

"Look pretty, and do as little as possible." - The Reagan Administration to the CDC during the AIDS epidemic in the 80s.
