I've received similarly racist forwards from people over the years, and I can't understand why the sender is so stupid as to assume me to be as racist as they are? Do people who forward this stuff really think that they are normal, ordinary folks just passing along a nasty racist image all in good fun? Well to them I say, "No, you are not normal or ordinary. There is something mean and nasty inside of you and you should really endeavor to fix it before you die!"

well I feel better now.

Oh. Ha ha. So funny. Not racist at all.

Yeah. Right.

[And then they act all offended when you call them on their bigotry.]

In answer to your question, yes, I do beleive that they think they are "normal", and that anyone who shares their racial/ethnic background must surely think as they do.

At the very least, I expect that they desperately need to BELEIVE the above, because if it's not true - if they are not "normal", and everyone who is "like" them is not really like them - then their whole world view comes into question, and they have to think about things they have tried to avoid thinking about, and their whole little world falls apart.

One of the things that many of us have pointed out over the years is that the right-wing mind-set is a "closed system", a system of self-referential thought and tautological and/or non-sensical reasoning. But it's all sort of a self-contained system. If the system "breaks down" - if one part of it is not true - then ALL of it might be questioned, and the whole right-wing sense of identity and view of the world might suddenly be seen for how innaccurate/false it is, and....the mind just CANNOT HANDLE THAT.

I've always beleived that is why they're so threatened and enraged by stuff that we wouldn't think twice about.

For example, you and I probably see the US as a multi-cultural place, and are fine with that. If the country elects a black president, if your neighbors speak Spanish, or if people wish you Happy Holidays because not everyone celebrates Christmas - well, you couldn't care less, because you probably don't rely on your White-Christian-Native-born Status for your sense of worth. But imagine if your ENTIRE IDENTITY, as well as your sense of WORTH, were built aroud being a "Real" (white, Christian, native-born) American, and you really beleived that being a "Real" American was what gave you worth as a person. Well, then, being reminded that America is full of non-white, non-Christian, non-native born people who don't share your world view and that maybe you ain't so special after all - or rather, aren't so special just because of those demographic factors - would FREAK YOU OUT. Remember, a lot of conservative dupes - the poor, downtrodden fools who think that the party of billionaires is on their side - have no "status" in our society other than their demographic position...they're poor, they have crappy jobs or no jobs, they don't live in fancy homes like the people on tee-vee, and every day they're reminded that by the value system of the Corproate State of America, they really are "nobodies". Being a "Real American" and identifying with their oppressors against "those" (non-white non-native non-Christian) people is all they have to make them feel good about themselves. If you threaten to take that away from them by pointing out - either directly or indirectly with your "liberal" attitudes or use of facts - that "no, you're a downtrodden schmuck like all of those brown people, immigrants, and people who beleive in other or no gods, and you are just being used like a fool by the people with real power who laugh at your guillibility", they will respond with denial and hated towards the person trying to shatter their illusions.

Maybe I'm not explaining it well, but others have probably done better (and more detailed) jobs of saying what I'm trying to get at.

Was this from that Oscar-worthy movie that intellectual giant, Sainted Ronnie of the Alzheimers, made back in the day called "Bedtime for Bonzo"???

Yeah yeah, calling out conservatives on their out-front, no-holds-barred, completely obvious racism only results in a knee-jerk reaction into: a) complete denial, and b) attacking the messenger by saying that we are the ones who are racist.

It's what RushGlenn has carefully taught conservatives to do, and the good little authoritarian pavlov dogs that they are... they go for it... mainly bc they don't want to *admit* how very deeply racist, ugly and nasty they are.

No, this isn't funny at all, but then neither is just about any other rightwing "humor." Rightwing "humor" is almost always racist, sexist, mean, nasty, attacking, destructive and base. And here is "Exhibit A."

Can you baboons please explain something to me?

Calling Bush a chimp, a baboon, an ape, a moron, stupid, inept, and the worst president ever was not racist. But disagreeing with Obama's failed policies and calling him the same is.

Did you laugh at that image of Bush as a monkey? But you don't if it's a man with black skin? So race matters to you, does it? Because it doesn't to me. I think they're both baboons.

Hypocrites. I admit I find a lot of humor in this site. Thank you!

That's right, because we don't live in a societal vacuum. An awareness of centuries-old racist jokes comparing black people to monkeys certainly plays into a person's reading of this kind of forward. Or at least, it should.

So race matters to you, does it? Because it doesn't to me.

It's easy to say that race doesn't matter to you when you're not the one bearing the brunt of racism. Do you complain about how there's no Straight Pride Day, too?

We called Bush the worst president ever because he was. (Of course, we don't remember all the way back to James Buchanan, so George might have had a little competition in the ineffectiveness category. And Harding deserves an honorable mention in the competition.)

Because it doesn't to me

Except the underlying force for all of my political beliefs and the very foundation of the political party I support are based on a fear of non-white people and the terrifying thought that they may demand equal rights and protections from government. The Horror!

Correct. Because the criticism wasn't based on his race, and most of those statements have no racial underpinnings. People can be stupid, inept, worst ever morons regardless of race. The monkey thing could be racist, except that white people have NEVER been denigrated racially with monkey stereotypes, while black people suffered that indignity for centuries.

But disagreeing with Obama's failed policies and calling him the same is.

No, disagreeing with Obama is not racist in itself. Disagreeing with him for obviously racist reasons is, and passing around "jokes" like this which are based on centuries of ugly, hateful anti-black stereotypes is most definitely 100% racist. Feel free to disagree with Obama (most of us here on the left do to some degree), but make it about policy and facts, not birthirism, racism, and hysterics about Marxist Kenyan anti-colonials.

So race matters to you, does it?

Race ALWAYS matters. Its the #1 issue in all of American history, in every era. The important thing is how we address it and deal with the difficulties it causes and continues to cause. The Republican Party has built a very effective base by building up white resentment against the supposed intrusions of other races into "their country". So don't pretend that race doesn't matter.

To the various baboons:

You're right. I never bore the burden of racism. But I did bear the brunt of sexism in 1984 when my then-husband began beating me in public, and all would-be rescuers faded away when he explained I was just his wife. (You all know black men got the right to vote before women, right?) In 1990, I was asked to register my business as "minority owned" since female business owners were a minority at the time, and my clients could have reaped tax credits. I could have won all kinds of extra contracts with that, but I declined since I think your Chicken Little politics are obscene. Is there a baboon out there that needs further explanation?

I don't care about gay or straight pride, but I do care about anybody being accused of bias because they happen to disagree with someone and you baboons claim it's due to that someone's color, creed, orientation, or sex when it's simply not true. Where is the parade for that? Won't you join me in that one? Oh yeah, I forgot, your high horse won't ride in anything other than fake outrage.

I'm not Republican, but I do wave the flag against illegal aliens. I'm sick of them bankrupting our health care system, I'm sick of them bankrupting our school systems, I'm sick of them contributing to our current depression. But to the last baboon: "Illegal alien," "Cuban," "Mexican," and whatever other terms you want to ascribe to the people you don't like, those are not races, dummy.

I think Obama is a baboon, but I'll change that to "buffoon" to protect the delicate sensibilities of the baboons in here. I don't care what color he is. If you own a small business, you know exactly what I mean.

It is kind of rude to insult such a cute little monkey. It's not fair to compare the two, as I'm sure the monkey would do a much better job in the white house.

A monkey would do a much better job? No, we tried that and it didn't work out at all well. The monkey had to go back to Crawford, Texas.

Legally, yes. Practically, no. Black people didn't enjoy full voting rights until after 1964.

In 1990, I was asked to register my business as "minority owned" since female business owners were a minority at the time, and my clients could have reaped tax credits. I could have won all kinds of extra contracts with that, but I declined since I think your Chicken Little politics are obscene

So you didn't run your business to maximize success because of some bullshit political agenda? You didn't take advantage of a program designed to encourage historically disadvantaged groups to slightly correct the wrongs of centuries of oppression?

I don't care about gay or straight pride, but I do care about anybody being accused of bias because they happen to disagree with someone and you baboons claim it's due to that someone's color, creed, orientation, or sex when it's simply not true.

Can you not read? Was it not explained to you that criticism is not racist in itself, but criticism based in racism is, indeed, very fucking racist?

I'm sick of them bankrupting our health care system, I'm sick of them bankrupting our school systems, I'm sick of them contributing to our current depression

This is kind of like being mad at the rig workers of BP for the Gulf oil spill, and totally giving a pass to the CEO and other executives who actually made the decisions which led to the disaster. Yes, illegal immigration is a problem, but it didn't cause this depression and it didn't break the health care system. The "free market" did that just fine on its own.

. But to the last baboon: "Illegal alien," "Cuban," "Mexican," and whatever other terms you want to ascribe to the people you don't like, those are not races, dummy.

For the purposes of scapegoating almost any ethnic or political group will do. No, "Mexican" is not a race in itself. But whipping up anti-Mexican fervor is most certainly a racist tactic. This is pretty basic to understand.

If you own a small business, you know exactly what I mean..

Ya, things must be really rough for small businessed now. First Wall Street wrecks the economy, and then Obama had the gall to cut your taxes after that? What a buffoon.

I don't think you understand. They weren't comparing the monkey to Reagan.
