AGREE OR DELETE

This is by a daughter of a murdered couple in   Raytown , MO. who had a Bible and Bookstore on 63rd street   ...

When I had to testify at the murder trial of my parents a week ago, I was asked to raise my right hand... The bailiff started out "Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth?"

I stood there and waited but she said nothing. She said "Do you?"

I was so stunned I blurted out "What happened to "so help me God'?"

She came back with "Do you?" I replied yes, but I was perplexed.

Then the judge said .
"You can say that if you want to."
I stopped, raised my right hand, and finished with
"So help me God!"
I told my son and daughter that when it came time for them to testify, they should do the same.

I don't know what can be done about it, but it's time for us to step up and DO something.

NBC this morning had a poll on this question.. They had the highest number of responses that they have ever had for one of t heir polls, and the percentage was the same as this:

86% to keep the words, 14% against.. That is a pretty 'commanding' public response.

I was asked to
send this on if I agreed or delete if I didn't.

Now it is your turn.. It is said that
86% of Americans believe in God.

Therefore, I have a very hard time understanding why there is such a mess about having
"In God We Trust" on our money and having God in the Pledge of Allegiance.

Why is the world catering to this 14%?

If you agree, pass this on, if not, simply delete....
In God We Trust

If You Choose To Delete Perhaps Then You Are Part Of The Problem
Me? I'm Passing It On.   It seems to get worse daily.
"GOD BLESS AMERICA "Don't let the 14% remove God!

Snopes for the story (mis-attributed)
Snopes for the NBC poll (probably some other Internet poll regarding some other use of God in the pledge or currency)
Also, "under God" and "In God We Trust" were only adopted in the '50s to ward off the godless Commie threat.

But the really troublesome part is this attempt to paint anyone who doesn't believe like you as a minority trying to destroy your way of life.

America is largely a Christian nation, but the Pilgrims came here fleeing the Church of England's influence, and and our Founding Fathers declared that we should not prohibit the free exercise of religion. We are not a nation of Christians vs. Everyone Else. We are a nation of all races and creeds, and we are stronger for it.

Snopes on the trial (mis-attribution as usual)

And, of course, the references to God in our pledge, motto, and currency were added in the '50s to ward off the godless Commies.

But what disturbs me is this attempt to paint America as under under attack. It's an Internet poll -- there's no serious chance of "In God We Trust" being struck down.

The Pilgrims came to America fleeing the Church of England. The Founding Fathers declared that we should not prohibit the free practice of religion. We are not a nation of Christians vs. Everyone Else. We are a nation of all races, all creeds, and we are stronger for it.

Another argument using faulty logic--and a lot of cheerful colors and fonts!
86% MAY believe in God, but why assume 86% also want God's name on money, or involved in a national pledge or even involved in the judicial system? It's entirely possible God really doesn't want her name on money at all; she's uncomfortable with of nationalistic pledges and doesn't find our legal system to contain much justice. So on behalf of God, please keep her name out of all these non-religious affairs!

Oh, the horror!

People only have to say "so help me God" if they actually BELEIVE in God, ane actually WANT to say it? This must mean that the government is FAILING in its duty to sufficiently shove religion down everyone's throat - as if we had freedom of religion for non-beleivers, or something!

Also, notice how one is given two options - "pass it on", or delete it. How come "Hit 'reply all' and offer a different viewpoint" isn't suggested? (Personally, I highly recommend that 3rd option - it was almost magical the way a couple of 'reply all's got me taken off all of the forward lists for good. I now have to come here to find out what's going round.)

Pity the poor pathetic victimized "christiany" conservatives who cannot ram their religion down everyone's throats constantly.... who cannot invoke "God's" name at every turn, except that... they can, if they WANT to.

guh

I'm sure this is some made-pablum pumped out by rightwing propoganda mills in order to distract the credulous conservatives about how they're being ripped off by the wealthy (as demonstrated by the prior propoganda on this blog).

We've seen this one - or something very similar - before. Hard to say whether it's true or not, but it certainly hits the right now of rightwing persecution and victimization. Poor juror couldn't invoke God's name... except that she could! So what is the point?? Is there a point?? OH yeah: conservatives are victims of something or other... booga booga.

Some of us don't believe in God. Do you really want us to take a oath to your make-believe deity in order to prove our trustworthiness?

Also, some of us have religious beliefs that require us to be truthful in all things, and as such are opposed to taking oaths at all.

This, coming from a person who interviews people under the penalty of perjury for a living.

I love how her parents were murdered (unless they were murderers?) and all she's worried about is the wording of the vows.

Argh, my comment vanished again (twice!)

Snopes on the poll
Snopes on the swearing in

What's disturbing here is trying to force Americans to believe that there's a war being fought between Chrstians (us good Real Americans) and non-Christians (them furriners and heathens).

That's not what America was founded for. The Pilgrims fled religious persecution in England, and our Founding Fathers (many of whom wouldn't be accepted today by the Christian Right) declared that everyone has the right to free practice of his or her religion.

We are not a nation of Christians vs. Others. We are a nation of all races and creeds, and that "melting pot" has been our strength for centuries.

I loved you post because if I hadn't read 'Bolesno Grinje', I would have been misled. You are so right in all the points you raised. staggered was cruelty masqueraded as tradition.
