THIS WILL CURDLE YOUR BLOOD & BREAK YOUR HEART?

Interesting Statistics?

Professor Joseph Olson of Hemline University School of Law,
?
St. Paul, Minnesota, points out facts of 2008 Presidential election:?

Number of States won by:
?
?Democrats: 19?
?Republicans: ?29?

Square miles of land won by:
?
?Democrats: 580,000
Republicans: ?2,427,000
?

Population of counties won by:
?
?Democrats: 127 million
Republicans: 143 million
?

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:
Democrats: 13.2
Republicans: ?2.1
?
??
?Professor Olson adds:?
?"In aggregate, the map of the territory Republican won by Republicans?
? was ?mostly the land owned by the taxpaying citizens of the country.?

Democrat territory mostly encompassed those citizens living in?
government-owned tenements and living off various forms of
?
?government welfare.?
??
Professor Olson believes the United States is now somewhere?
between the "complacency and apathy" phase of Professor Tyler's?
definition of democracy, with some forty percent of the nation's?
population already having reached the "governmental dependency" phase.?
??
?If Congress grants amnesty and citizenship to twenty million criminal
invaders called illegal's and they vote, then we can say goodbye to
?
?the USA in fewer than five years?
??
?Pass this along to help everyone realize just how much is at stake,?
?knowing that apathy is the greatest danger to our freedom.

Except most of the places where McCain won were rural, sparsely populated areas. And, um, my county has plenty of taxpayers (including property tax!!) who voted for Obama. He won our county. Also, many of Florida's blue counties are inhabited by fairly rich people, you know, the 'hardworking' ones who supposedly deserve all the tax breaks....

?I wonder if starting all the lines
?with question marks is some new
?wingnutty thing I've missed out on?

?Anyway, I found this:

Obviously this isn't true:

Obama states
Maine
Vermont
New Hampshire
Massachusetts
New York
Connecticut
Rhode Island
New Jersey
Michigan
Ohio
Indiana
Wisconsin
Illinois
Minnesota
Iowa
Maryland
Delaware
Virginia
North Carolina
Florida
New Mexico
Colorado
Nevada
California
Oregon
Washington
Hawaii

Yes we can.

It is Hamline University, not Hemline.

These are Bush v Gore statistics that were in a right wing propaganda email falsely attributed to Professor Olson.

Well it doesn't break my heart, but it does make me a bit queasy that this same stupid email is still circulation 8 years after it was first proven to be bullshit.

But if you believe enough it seems like it's true!!!

I like how it's the EXACT same numbers as the original....they were too lazy even to change the original figures.

Ok 1st of all, it's HAmline University. I'm a Grad student there. It's the oldest U in the State. Olson's info is below.

This given data is without proper context. The population distorted cartographic Map of the USA is more apropos. Besides, he got more popular and electoral votes and won and that's waht matters. Republicans really need to concentrate on fixing their own party instead of this weak sh*t...

Forget "context". Most of the info given is just flat out incorrect. What's worse, it was only supposedly kind of sorta close to the ballpark of being accurate for the 2000 election and is even more wrong today.

Only wingnuts could be overly concerned about the number of states and total land area won.

I can imagine them pointing to a map and saying, "See? See!? We too are the majority!"

This particular one provides a strange peek into the wingnut mind.

When they think about New York City, do they imagine hundreds of square miles of city blocks with unemployed black folks sitting on the front steps, collecting welfare?

Do they imagine that their heroes - the White Knights of Wall Street - run the entire city? Maybe traders on Wall Street all work blue collar jobs at night in addition to their day jobs. SOMEBODY has to keep the city running - and we all know that it couldn't possibly be the people who voted for Obama.

does the reference government welfare include the locations of companies that received bailout money?

I got this email recently (Oct 2009) from my conservative Uncle. Out of curiosity I went back and calculated the real numbers from the 2008 election, based on the criteria laid out in this email which dates back to 2000. Even the original email was full of factual errors, but that’s old news. So, what are the real numbers for 2008?

Here’s the original email (with commentary):

Number of States won by:
Democrats: 19
Republicans: 29
(does anyone else notice that 19 + 29 is not 50? That should really be clue #1.)

Square miles of land won by:
Democrats: 580,000
Republicans: 2,427,000
(The land area of the US is 3,537,438 according to the US Census. 580,000 + 2,427,000 = 3,007,000. Where did the missing 530,438 square miles go? Must be those two states they forgot above. )

Population of counties won by:
Democrats: 127 million
Republicans: 143 million
(The 2008 population of the US was 304,059,724 according to the US Census. 127m + 143m = 270million. Missing 34 million people?)

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in counties won by:
Democrats: 13.2
Republicans: 2.1

Here’s the real data:

2008 Election results
Number of States won by:
Democrats: 28 (+District of Columbia)
Republicans: 22
Source: http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/

Square miles of land won by:
Democrats: 1,483,770
Republicans: 2,310,315
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_and_territories_by_area

Population of states won by:
Democrats: 210 million
Republicans: 94 million
Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_U.S._states_and_territories_by_population

Murder rate per 100,000 residents in states won by:
Democrats: 4.3
Republicans: 4.9
Source: U.S. Dept of Justice http://bjsdata.ojp.usdoj.gov/dataonline/Search/Homicide/State/StateHomicide.cfm
(I used state-level data because I could not find any county-level data that included all 3000+ counties)

So I hope this opens some eyes. The only number that matters is 270. That’s how many electoral votes it takes to win the election. And the final numbers there were:

Obama: 365 (66,882,230 votes, or 53%)
McCain: 173 (58,343,671 votes or 46%)
Source: http://www.cnn.com/ELECTION/2008/
(I looked for a Fox News source, so conservatives would believe it, but strangely they no longer carry this information. Trying to forget, perhaps?)

Next time land can vote, let me know.

This one goes back to 1/22/2009. Look for it under RWD, "Elections", "This will curdle your blood and break your heart".

As mentioned above, it's Hamline U.
