Fwd: HANOI JANE!!

Sent by Bill from "Fabulous Blue Ridge, GA". I'm working backwards through my backlog of forwards to post, and this email about Jane Fonda should be tucked next to this excellent rebuttal article written by Rick Perstein, also submitted by Bill:

"...this showed up this am...I was going to send my buddy a debunking, but
just couldn't face it...love and peace, and thanx for doing the Lord's
(or Flying Spaghetti Monster or Buddah or whatever's) Work,"
-Bill in Fabulous Blue Ridge GA

Ha! You're too kind. Thanks Bill.

Can,t believe she has not been chastized by more people. Oh well some people shouldn,t sit down for fear of breaking their freaking necks

Just a reminder
SHE REALLY WAS A TRAITOR!!
She really was a traitor

A TRAITOR IS ABOUT TO BE HONORED
KEEP THIS MOVING ACROSS
AMERICA
This is for all the kids born in the 70's who do
not remember, and didn't have to bear the
burden that our fathers, mothers and older
brothers and sisters had to bear.
Jane Fonda is being honored as one of the
"100 Women of the Century."
BY BARBRA WALTERS
Unfortunately, many have forgotten and still
countless others have never known how Ms.
Fonda betrayed not only the idea of our country,
but specific men who served and sacrificed
during
Vietnam

The first part of this is from an F-4E pilot
The pilot's name is Jerry Driscoll, a River Rat.
In 1968, the former Commandant of the USAF
Survival School was a POW in Ho Lo Prison
the "
Hanoi Hilton."
Dragged from a stinking cesspit of a cell,
cleaned, fed, and dressed in clean PJ's, he was
ordered to describe for a visiting American
"Peace Activist" the "lenient and humane
treatment" he'd received.
He spat at Ms. Fonda, was clubbed, and was
dragged away.
During the subsequent beating, he fell forward
on to the
camp Commandant 's feet, which
sent that officer berserk.
In 1978, the Air Force Colonel still suffered from
double vision (which permanently ended his
flying career) from the Commandant's frenzied
application of a wooden baton.
From 1963-65, Col. Larry Carrigan was in the
47FW/DO (F-4E's). He spent 6 years in the
"Hanoi Hilton",,, the first three of which his
family only knew he was "missing in action".
His wife lived on faith that he was still alive.
His group, too, got the cleaned-up, fed and
clothed routine in preparation for a
"peace delegation" visit.
They, however, had time and devised a plan to
get word to the world that they were alive
and still survived. Each man secreted a tiny
piece of paper, with his Social Security Number
on it, in the palm of his hand.
When paraded before Ms. Fonda and a
cameraman, she walked the line, shaking each
man's hand and asking little encouraging
snippets like: "Aren't you sorry you bombed
babies?" and "Are you grateful for the humane
treatment from your benevolent captors?"
Believing this HAD to be an act, they each
palmed her their sliver of paper.
She took them all without missing a beat. At the
end of the line and once the camera stopped
rolling, to the shocked disbelief of the POWs,
she turned to the officer in charge and handed
him all the little pieces of paper.
Three men died from the subsequent beatings.
Colonel Carrigan was almost number four
but he survived, which is the only reason we
know of her actions that day.
I was a civilian economic development advisor
in
Vietnam , and was captured by the North
Vietnamese communists in
South Vietnam in
1968, and held prisoner for over 5 years.
I spent 27 months in solitary confinement; one
year in a cage in
Cambodia ; and one year
in a "black box" in
Hanoi .
My North Vietnamese captors deliberately
poisoned and murdered a female missionary, a
nurse in a leprosarium in Ban me Thuot, South
Vietnam , whom I buried in the jungle near the
Cambodian border.
At one time, I weighed only about 90 lbs.
(My normal weight is 170 lbs.)

We were Jane Fonda's "war criminals."
When Jane Fonda was in Hanoi , I was asked by
the camp communist political officer if I would
be willing to meet with her.
I said yes, for I wanted to tell her about the real
treatment we POWs received... and how
different it was from the treatment purported by
the North Vietnamese, and parroted by her as
"humane and lenient."
Because of this, I spent three days on a rocky
floor on my knees, with my arms outstretched
with a large steel weights placed on my hands,
and beaten with a bamboo cane.
I had the opportunity to meet with Jane Fonda
soon after I was released. I asked her
if she would be willing to debate me on TV.
She never did answer me.
These first-hand experiences do not exemplify
someone who should be honored as part
of "100 Years of Great Women."
Lest we forget..." 100 Years of Great Women"
should never include a traitor whose hands are
covered with the blood of so many patriots.
There are few things I have strong visceral
reactions to, but Hanoi Jane's participation in
blatant treason, is one of them.
Please take the time to forward to as many
people as you possibly can.
It will eventually end up on her computer and
she needs to know that we will never forget.

716 Maintenance Squadron, Chief of
Maintenance
DSN: 875-6431
COMM: 883-6343
PLEASE HELP BY SENDING THIS TO
EVERYONE IN YOUR ADDRESS BOOK. IF
ENOUGH PEOPLE SEE THIS MAYBE HER
STATUS WILL CHANGE
In Memory of
my brother -in- law
LT. C.Thomsen Wieland
who spent 100 days at the Hanoi Hilton
She really was a Traitor
IF YOU NEVER FORWARDED
ANYTHING IN YOUR LIFE FORWARD THIS SO THAT EVERYONE WILL KNOW!!!!!!

Here's the email I sent upon receiving this screed:

One of the unfortunate aspects of the Internet is that misinformation and disinformation can both circulate quickly and persist for years. This particular tirade has been adequately debunked before (for one example, check out Urban Legends) but outrage over criticism of the military seems to have a long shelf life.

To correct the most egregious fabrications of "keep this moving":

1. Former pilot Jerry Driscoll calls the 'spitting and clubbing' tale "the product of a very vivid imagination."

2. Retired Colonel Larry Carrigan describes the 'slips of paper' anecdote as "a figment of someone's imagination," and states, "I never met Jane Fonda."

3. To top it off, the "100 Years of Great Women" program ran on 30 April 1999. Getting worked up over Jane Fonda's inclusion now is nearly ten years too late to have much of an effect. Mike McGrath, President of Nam-POWs, explains the e-mail screed's persistence by saying: "There are a lot of folks out there who would love to have a story like that to hang their hat and their hate on."

P.S. It is true, of course, that Jane Fonda slandered returning vets as "hypocrites and liars" and denied that they had been tortured. She met with Vietnam veterans in 1988 to apologize, and said in a later interview, "It hurt so many soldiers...[i]t was the most horrible thing I could possibly have done. It was just thoughtless."

Although her apologies were belated and rather tepid, one wishes that those who fabricated these email stories had even her minimal respect for the truth. (I, for one, doubt they will be making any public retractions.)

Her minimal respect for the truth was belated, and somewhat tortured. It definitely was not heartfelt when given. Although the email is incorrect, Jane Fonda was merely promoting herself throughout the incident, with the Vietnam statements and later with her 'apology'. You should go back and check the press coverage of the apology to see how hollow it really was.

This one has been making the rounds for SUCH a long time! The latest version I received today from my Right Wing Uncle had inserted in the beginning that Obama is about to honor Jane Fonda!! He had emailed out the older version with Barbara Walters as the solo villan, about to honor Jane Fonda in "100 Years of Great Women", back on Sept. 8, 2009.

That same version with Barbara Walters about to honor Hanoi Jane, can be found posted on the conservative blog, Free Republic, back in September 2006: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1639596/posts

Snopes has a nice long piece about this particular email and it talks about what is true and untrue in the email and quite a bit is about the whole Jane Fonda issue and how it has played out over the years with Jane's half-hearted apologies, etc. Very interesting.
But the most notable information in the Snopes article is that the "100 Years of Great Women", show aired back in 1999, (as noted in previous comment)so NO ONE is ABOUT to honor Jane Fonda, it's over.

Here's the link to the Snopes article: http://www.snopes.com/military/fonda.asp

Also, here's the link to the IMDB listing for the original show back in 1999: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0325162/fullcredits#cast.

It's really amazing how this right wing forward stuff persists over years and years...

Just for the record, her actions did not constitute treason. Nixon's state dept tried, the Justice department refused on the grounds that it did not constitute it.

She was shown some veterans, they did not appear to be tortured. She stated what she saw. I will let her speak to this issue. Her exact quote on this issue was a completely accurate statement that

"I’m quite sure that there were incidents of torture…but the pilots who are saying it was the policy of the Vietnamese and that it was systematic, I believe that’s a lie."

Not exactly denying torture.

She goes on to explain that

"according to even the most hardcore senior officers, torture stopped late in 1969, two and a half years before I got there. And, most importantly, I would never say such things to our servicemen, whom I respect, whether or not I agree with the mission they have been sent to perform, which is not of their choosing."

and that
"Once the POWs were home, the Pentagon and White House handpicked a group of the highest ranking POWs–senior officers, to travel the national media circuit, some of them telling of torture. A handwritten note from President Nixon to H.R. Haldeman says that “the POW’s need to have the worst quotes of R. Clark and Fonda” to use in their TV appearances, but this information shouldn’t come from the White House.[7] These media stories were allowed to become the official narrative, the universal “POW Story,” giving the impression that all the men had been subjected to systematic torture—right up to the end–and that torture was the policy of the North Vietnamese government. The POWs who said there was no torture in their camps were never allowed access to the media....In my anger at the torture story that was being allowed to spread, at how the entire situation was being manipulated, I made a mistake I deeply regret. I said that the POWs claiming torture were liars, hypocrites, and pawns.".

so, to reiterate, she acknowledged torture, but believed that it had ceased post 1969. She apologized to a bunch of veterans after speaking out in anger against their attempts to paint her as a traitor by Nixon. Afterwards the white house tried to exploit politically, a group of pro-war veterans, to knock her and cover their asses. And has had to pay ever since for doing the right thing, by being a central character in America's own Dolchstosslegende
