RE: Jay Leno's Letter

["Just got this icky one today...supposedly written by Jay Leno. -Sandy" This is a variance of an earlier post, but I find its logic so bullet-proof, I had to share it again. Read it a few times, and you SPOILED BRATs will realize how good we have it here under Bush's protective watch. That we are a BLESSED PEOPLE in spite of our bad-news media, free to drive cross-country or eat at a restaurant, so just shut-up and enjoy your unappreciated FREEDOM UNDER GOD.]

Subject: Jay Leno's Letter
Received this from a friend. I hardly ever watch Jay Leno (I fall asleep by
then) so don't know much about him. I do know that his wife has done and
continues to do a lot of work in getting women's rights and respect for
women in Afghanistan where they are treated like useless property by the
Islamic radicals. This is good so hope you all will read it. It's long,
but worth the read. I definitely believe that the media is driving the
negativity in our country. Not that all is perfect, but it's sure not as
awful as they lead you to believe.

Jay's letter:
"The other day I was reading Newsweek magazine and came across some poll
data I found rather hard to believe. It must be true given the source,
right? The Newsweek poll alleges that 67 percent of Americans are unhappy
with the direction the country is headed and 69 percent of the country is
unhappy with the performance of the president. In essence 2/3s of the
citizenry just ain't happy and want a change.

So being the knuckle dragger I am, I started thinking, ''What we are so
unhappy about?'' Is it that we have electricity and running water 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week? Is our unhappiness the result of having air
conditioning in the summer and heating in the winter? Could it be that 95.4
percent of these unhappy folks have a job? Maybe it is the ability to walk
into a grocery store at any time and see more food in moments than Darfur
has seen in the last year? Maybe it is the ability to drive from the
Pacific Ocean to the Atlantic Ocean without having to present identification
papers as we move through each state? Or possibly the hundreds of clean and
safe motels we would find along the way that can p rovide temporary shelter?
I guess having thousands of restaurants with varying cuisine from around the
world is just not good enough. Or could it be that when we wreck our car,
emergency workers show up and provide services to help all and even send a
helicopter to take you to the hospital. Perhaps you are one of the 70
percent of Americans who own a home. You may be upset with knowing that in
the unfortunate case of a fire, a group of trained firefighters will appear
in moments and use top notch equipment to extinguish the flames thus saving
you, your family and your belongings. Or if, while at home watching one of
your many flat screen TVs, a burglar or prowler intrudes , an officer
equipped with a gun and a bullet-proof vest will come to defend you and your
family against attack or loss. This all in the backdrop of a neighborhood
free of bombs or militias raping and pillaging the re sidents. Neighborhoods
where 90 percent of teenagers own cell phones and computers. How about the
complete religious, social and political freedoms we enjoy that are the envy
of everyone in the world? Maybe that is what has 67 percent of you folks
unhappy. Fact is, we are the largest group of ungrateful, spoiled brats the
world has ever seen. No wonder the world loves the U.S., yet has a great
disdain for its citizens. They see us for what we are. The most blessed
people in the world who do nothing but complain about what we don't have ,
and what we hate about the country instead of thanking the good Lord we live
here.I know, I know. What about the president who took us into war and has
no plan to get us out? The president who has a measly 31 percent approval
rating? Is this the same president who guided the nation in the dark days
after 9/11? The president that cut taxes to bring an economy out of
recession? Could this be the same guy who has been called every name in the
book for succeeding in keeping all the spoiled ungrateful brats safe from
terrorist attacks?
The commander in chief of an all-volunteer army that is out there defending
you and me? Did you hear how bad the President is on the news or
talk show? Did this news affect you so much, make you so unhappy you
couldn't take a look around for yourself and see all the good things and
be glad?

Think about it......are you upset at the President because he actually
caused you personal pain OR is it because the "Media" told you he was
failing to kiss your sorry ungrateful behind every day. Make no mistake
about it. The troops in Iraq and Afghanistan have volunteered to serve, and
in many cases may have died for your freedom. There is currently no draft in
this country. They didn't have to go. They are able to refuse to go and end
up with either a ''general'' discharge, an ''other than honorable''
discharge or, worst case scenario, a ''dishonorable'' discharge after a few
days in the brig. So why then the flat-out discontentment in the minds of
69 percent of Americans? Say what you want but I blame it on the media. If
it bleeds it leads and they specialize in bad news. Everybody will watch a
car crash with blood and guts. How many will watch kids selling lemonade at
the corner? The media knows this and media outlets are for-profit
corporations. They offer what sells , and when criticized, try to defend
their actions by "justifying" them in one way or another. Just ask why they
tried to allow a murderer like O.J. Simpson to write a book about how he
didn't kill his wife, but if he did he would have done it this
way......Insane!

Stop buying the negativism you are fed everyday by the media. Shut off the
TV, burn Newsweek, and use the New York Times for the bottom of your bird
cage. Then start being grateful for all we have as a country. There is
exponentially more good than bad. We are among the most blessed peoples on
Earth and should thank God several times a day, or at least be thankful and
appreciative. With hurricanes, tornados, fires out of control, mud slides,
flooding, severe thunderstorms tearing up the country from one end to
another, and with the threat of bird flu and terrorist attacks, are we sure
this is a good time to take God out of the Pledge of Allegiance?"

Jay Leno

Pass it on.

Love the site idea. I actually got this exact forward from my very own (usually rational) Right Wing Mom, and I was incensed enough to craft a reply. To my surprise, she admirably forwarded my response to all of her original recipients and admitted her misattribution. That type of thing is why, no matter how much her positions frustrate me, I have nothing but respect for her. My reply follows (sorry to take up so much comment real-estate).

This is indeed a great nation. We have near-universal electricity, heat, air conditioning. The protections of emergency services. Freedom of transit within our borders. Freedom to practice our religions and not be ruled by the dogma of others. Freedom of speech, of the press, of political discourse, and basic assumptions about the veracity of the information we receive.

We had these things in the Clinton administration. We had them during Bush 1. And Reagan. And Carter. And going back through the era. Not always at the same level of ubiquity; we've worked hard over the years, as a society, to ensure them. To make sure that they're the baseline of being an American.

So maybe Bush's low approval rating is a reflection of our belief that he has done everything in his power to take those things away from us.

By making egregious errors in the middle east he's helping to further destabilize the region that is currently the foundation of our electricity, heat, and AC. By appointing inexperienced cronies he contributed to the failure of our emergency services and disaster preparation in New Orleans.

By presiding over arbitrary and ineffectual regulations of air travel, and actively supporting national ID standardization, he's limited Americans' free transit within their own country, with the added bonus of eliminating both our de facto and our explicit protections of privacy.

I can go on...

By channeling federal money to faith-based organizations, he's using our tax dollars to fund religious institutions whether we support those groups or not. By vetoing laws that reflect the people's desire to explore the scientific benefits of stem cell research, he prioritizes his own particular religious interpretations over the secular, rational policy we are constitutionally bound to follow.

By confining protestors to "free speech zones" he impedes our ability to have a balanced national discourse. By hiring and protecting white-collar thugs who are willing to leak the identity of an intelligence agent in order to punish their critics, he shows that silencing the opposition is more important to him than national security or basic human morality. By planting unqualified lackeys in the White House press corps, and bribing journalists to pretend they support his policies, he makes a mockery of the "fourth branch" of government and its obligation to take a critical eye to those in power.

...this is a great nation, and those who are unhappy with its direction and who disapprove of the president are the people who wish to keep it that way.

Oh, and Jay Leno was indeed an unlikely source of the essay you forwarded. So unlikely that he's not the source of it. It was written by Craig R. Smith for the arch-conservative online rag WorldNetDaily. The only contribution by Leno was the pledge of allegiance joke at the end. (http://www.snopes.com/politics/soapbox/hitnail.asp)

If you have ORIGINAL thoughts and something to say, great. If you're just going to pass along bogus, misattributed and poorly written forwards (Jay Leno absolutely did not write this garbage), then your site is useless. I don't care what your politics are; just give us something besides the same old recycled drivel.

bigyaz, you're missing the whole point of this site. He's showing us how the other side thinks.

Reading the original letter made me want to puke.

You know what really gets to me about these kind of rants (and while they're not just confined to the American right, the majority do tend to come from Republican-leaning speakers or media outlets)?

Don't you find the idea that America is the only country on the planet that allows its citizenry political freedom, and provides basic services such as hot and cold water, fire services and police etc etc astounding in its ignorance? As a European, I also find it faintly offensive in its assumptions.

Having visited the USA many times, I mean, I like the place, but I've yet to find a single freedom or basic service there that I don't have at home besides a slightly larger choice of consumer goods and cheaper gasoline.

It is clear that the US citizenry are regularly plied from an early age with the ridiculous idea that the good ole US of A is the sole state which provides freedom and opportunity in the world. It's rubbish obviously. (I can only theorise why you guys are fed this rubbish so regularly. Keeping the regular middle and working class citizenry patriotic while your governments economic and foreign policies are geared towards the enrichment of a hyper-wealthy corporate/political elite seems like a likely reason. But, like I said, only a theory..)

Spittle flecked rants like this supposed letter from 'Leno' are pretty common in the US in my experience. Scary, really scary.

Yep, well everything is good, except for the citizens of New Orleans, also these people will have loved Clinton!

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

Every foreigner I've ever met says that they love Americans. Some of them hate the US, though. I've never once encountered the opposite sentiment. They make a distinction between the negative actions of the US government (actions which have probably damaged US foreign policy for a generation) and Americans, who although occasionally bratty and spoiled are nonetheless also warm hearted, friendly, trusting, and dependable.

Maybe the person who wrote this has travelled outside the States, but I doubt it.

Just thinking about what all of you have said up to this point that I am responding. Whoever wrote the letter (doesn't matter really) has proven his/her point that we are not really grateful for the things Bush has done for us. You can't make the universal statement that Bush is evil. I myself, a middle class citizen have benefitted from Bush's tax policies, his leadership after 9/11, and his educational policy. What the media and all of you seem to dwell on is the negative.
Even in the war in Iraq, much good has been accomplished in the fact that the women and children are no longer wondering if the secret police will take them away and rape them or torture them becuase of a statement their father made about Saddam our his sons. Yes, they still have major concerns there but the power is now in their (Iraqies) hands to make things happen. And maybe the USA can continue to contribute to the well being in that country and many others in the future. Lets look past our selfish needs and look to providing others with the same blessings that we have.

If the Iraqis don't have to worry about secret police any more, it's probably because the administration is more concerned with establishing them here with no-knock, no-warrant around-the-clock secret surveillance of everybody. I feel so safe I can hardly move.

True. Now all they have to worry about is the U.S. trained Iraqi security forces and U.S. soldiers doing the raping and torturing

I like to earn rappelz rupees, because it is very interesting. I think if you meet the rappelz gold, you will like it too. And when you play the game well you can get some cheap rappelz rupees as the rewards from the game. As long as you have a lot of rappelz money in the game you will be strong, and you can go to buy rupees with the other players.
